A hat only feels right when it's sized right. Here's how to measure, how to read the chart, and how we dial in your exact fit — even by mail.
How to Measure
- Wrap a soft tape measure around your head where the hat will sit — about ⅛" above the ears and mid-forehead.
- Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Note the measurement in inches.
- Match your inches to the chart for your hat size. Between sizes? Size up — we fit it down precisely.
- Note your head shape (below) — it matters as much as the number.

When to Change
The age-old question is when to switch from felt to straw. Some say Labor Day; some go by the weather; some wear felt year-round. To each his own — but a good rule is felt for the cold months and straw when the heat sets in.
The truth is the climate decides as much as the calendar. Humid country is kinder to a felt than dry, hot country. Wear what serves you and the weather you're in.
The Shrinking Sweatband
When you dig out last season's hat, it often feels tight. Usually it isn't the felt or straw — it's the leather sweatband. Worn daily, it never fully dries, and like any leather left to dry on its own, it shrinks a little each season.
The good news: a sweatband can almost always be stretched — best done by a professional, with steam so the leather doesn't crack. A Dri-LEX band or keeping a block in the hat off-season helps prevent it altogether. Ask us and we'll set it right.
